How many times can I apply for SAS?

Once. Multiple applications from the same applicant will warrant disqualification.

I am a dual-citizen of an African country and a non-African country, do I still qualify?

Yes, having an African citizenship qualifies the applicant. A proof will need to provide (bio-page of an unexpired passport or a birth certificate).

Can I save my application and come back later?

No. Incomplete/unsubmitted applications will be lost. Applicants are encourage to write essays on a word file and save it. When ready to complete the application, copy the essay from the saved file, paste it, and submit the application.

I am a college/university student, can I still apply?

Applicants that qualify are high school seniors planning to pursue post-secondary education in the United States, and starting college the year of the SAS scholarship application. Example: A high school senior graduating in 2020 and starting college in 2020, will qualify to apply for the SAS in 2020. A high school senior graduating in 2020 and starting college in 2021 with no post secondary training, will qualify to apply for the SAS in 2021. An already matriculated college student and high school graduate with post-secondary training does not qualify to apply.

Does it matter if I got into a two-year college or a four-year college?

No it doesn't. Admission to any higher level college/university for post-secondary education qualifies the applicant.

What if I don't have enough community service hours?

To qualify to apply, a minimum of 20 hours of community service is needed for the senior year,And proof of hours will need to be provided. Application closes April 30. We suggest that applicants find local places to volunteer hours to meet the requirement.

What is the award? And how many people receive it?

Up to $3000 per recipient, as a tuition-only donation. The exact amount varies, depending on the candidate's tuition balance, after other fundings including Federal, State and other private scholarships/donations are paid into the student's account. SAS will then cover the difference in tuition.

Does the money get sent to me?

No, the award will be released directly to school. The student, custodian, guardian or parent will never receive a check, cash payment or direct deposit to a personal account. SAS' tuition donation is non-transferable, and should not be used, treated or considered as personal funds by the recipient, or any representing party. The release of funds is contingent upon verification of status as a student, with a proof of enrollment from the college or university.

Will my information be kept confidential?

Yes. All information submitted will be treated as confidential, and used only for the purposes of the scholarship.

Who should I ask to write me a recommendation letter?

One recommendation letter is required to complete your application. We suggest asking one of your favorite professors, mentors, employers, coaches, or even religious leaders etc. People who can best articulate your strengths and accomplishments. Recommendation letters written from family members or friends are unacceptable.

When can I apply?

Application opens February 14 and closes April 30.

Is there a GPA cut off to apply?

A GPA less than 3.75 disqualifies any applicant.

How quickly will I be notified about my application status?

Days to weeks after the close of the application window. We advise you to closely monitor the email you provided on the application for the status on your application.

Does SAS affect my eligibility for financial aid?

Most likely. SAS is given as a donation towards the candidate's tuition. After receiving it, the school will adjust the unmet financial needs accordingly. If SAS has been paid towards the student's account but funds from other scholarships were applied and resulted in a refund of SAS' funds back to the Foundation, the Foundation will ONLY cover the difference of the student's tuition up to a maximum of $3,000. If there is no tuition balance after other funds have been applied, the student will be considered to be fully-funded for tuition, and the SAS tuition-only donation would be awarded to the next qualifying candidate with a tuition need.

Can my award for SAS be withdrawn back to the Foundation?

Yes. SAS' tuition-only donation can be revoked if the recipient:

1. fails to graduate from high-school in the year of requesting the award

2. is expelled or terminated from high-school prior to graduation

3. receives fully-funded scholarship(s) from other source(s) that cover all tuition costs

4. provides false or misleading information to the Foundation

In the event of a forfeiture, any undisbursed funds will remain with the Foundation and may be awarded to another qualifying candidate. The recipient will have no claim to any portion of the forfeited scholarship. If the funds have been disbursed to the institution and the recipient becomes ineligible, any refunded amounts must be returned to the Shugabere Foundation, NOT to the recipient.

What happens after I submit my application?

All applicants will receive a follow up email on further steps to take in the application process.

I took a gap year after high school, can I still apply?

To qualify to apply for SAS, the candidate must register to start college in the year of the SAS application. Example: If you graduate high school in 2021, and you take a gap year with plans to start college in 2022. You should apply for SAS in 2022.

I applied to a US institution, but I haven't heard back to know if I got admitted or not. Can I still apply for SAS?

The SAS award is only given to students who have admission to colleges or universities in the US. If you apply for SAS hoping that you get into a school and we do not receive a copy of your admission letter by May 1, your application will be halted and disqualified at whatever stage it is.

I got admitted to a school outside the US, can I still apply?

To qualify to apply, you have to receive admission to an institution in the US.

I got admitted into a school, and later received another admission from my preferred US institution. Can I update my SAS application with my first choice school?

Yes. However, if your application makes it to the final stage, a confirmation of enrollment will need to be provided from the institution you intend to matriculate at.

Can SAS be expanded to post-secondary institutions outside the US?

Not at this time. We will take that into consideration for the future.

Shugabere Foundation reserves the right to withdraw SAS donation to candidate, if there is evidence of unruly behavior, or any request for cash, check, or personal deposit of tuition-only donation or refund to private account.
